Beechworth

Full day in Beechworth today.  Basically we walked all over the town.  Our plan had been to take a walking tour but that was off as the man was sick - so we just took a map and walked, starting off at the historic precinct (Telegraph Station, Courthouse, Gold Warden's Office etc) then up to HM Prison, decommissioned in 2004.

No-one was going to be climbing out over those walls!

From here we walked through the Town Hall gardens, that had some really large old trees.  The garden was started with trees given to the town by Baron von Mueller - who created the Melbourne Botanical gardens.  Some of the trees had big (and I mean BIG) danger signs on them, making you are aware that you could get hit on the head by the cones.  Maybe crash helmets should be compulsory in this park during the relevant time as the cones can apparently weigh up to 10 kilos.

By that time it was lunch time so we joined the rest of the tourists in Beechworth at the bakery.  More walking afterwards, first through the Chinese Garden and then along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail - albeit a very small part of it. After that back along the Rotary trail by the river to the motel for a sit down, via the lolly shop.
