Heading off to Utah

I am so behind with this blog!  Last night we drove into Portland Oregon so I have not posted since leaving San Francisco. We are doing so much there is no time for updating the blog.

So - quick written update with a few photos - maybe....

We left San Francisco and drove to Fernley, Nevada, going via Wolf Creek to have breakfast in a cafe called Katy's Creek. Next stop was at the Donna Party monument, and the Donna Pass. Then on to Lake Tahoe where we spent an hour, before leaving for the short drive to Fernley, our hotel and our first late night shop at Walmart - Jenny and Kate just love Walmart.

Next day we entered Utah and drove across the salt flats to Salt Lake City, stopping only at the Bonneville Salt Flats. We arrived at Jill's house after seven in the evening.  The next day we had a trip to the city and Temple Square which Jenny had not seen before. The next two days were busy with  meeting up with the family, shopping at stores like Hobby Lobby and other craft shops and eating out.

Before we knew it, it was Saturday and we had to leave for Yellowstone Park. That was a day's drive with a stop at the Idaho Potato Museum - a really fun museum. Lunch was at the museum - they did a really nice line in baked Idaho potatos.

Arriving late afternoon at Yellowstone we headed into the park and just missed Old Faithful doing its stuff around five but caught the display at just after six.  In the waiting time we walked around all the other geysers behind Old Faithful. It was getting dark when we arrived back at our motel.

The following we had a full day in the park, seeing as much as possible. It was actually dark when we drove out of the park. In fact it was so late, the restaurants in West Yellowstone were all closed by the time we returned to the town.

We headed for Portland Oregon next day not quite sure where we would stay overnight. We had a stop at Rupert, a town which boasted a heritage town square. It was really lovely, and we found the largest quilt shop we have ever seen.  At Boise we had a stop at Bootbarn but then continued on to Ontario, which is just inside the border of Oregon. Here we easily found a room in one of the half a dozen huge motels. Dinner was at Denny's and then we had another visit to the Walmart the other  side of the car park.

Next day we drove across Oregon, which is a really interesting state. We followed the Snake River for miles and miles. We stopped of to look at the John Day Dam and had lunch there in a diner, straight out of the 1950's.  Turning off the I 84 we took time to view the  Multnomah Falls and then drove  on to Portland, arriving here early evening. Katy does most of the driving and I was really glad I was not driving into Portland as it looked confusing  to me - Kate said it was easy. Dinner was at a Mongolian Restaurant and then we had a walk along the nearby river park before turning in.

Today we took it easy and did not leave the hotel until after ten. We took on tram and bus to the Rose Garden. After walking around that we went to the nearby Japanese Garden for a walk around that. Both were excellent. From there we returned to the city via Powell's, the biggest book shop ever, and the Voodoo Doughnut shop, the biggest doughnuts ever.

Now we are all flaked out and taking it easy. It is seven pm and we have not had dinner - not sure if we will go out again - Kate is fast asleep as she was finding the heat a bit much today.

So - that is everything we have done to date in a nutshell, now for adding a few photos. It is really frustrating adding photos as the control on the IPad app is not very good so the might be all over the place and it will be necessary to play 'guess where they are'!
