Reykjavik Day 1

We docked at around 7:45 and we were ready to go on our tour for today at 8:15, ready to take in Thingvellir Park, Geysir Hot Springs and Gullfoss Waterfall.  It was a full day, broken up by a pleasant lunch at a hotel by the hot springs.

First off, we walked through the rift that is tearing Iceland apart, at the rate of around 2 cm a year. Along with several hundred others...

The hot springs area was pretty busy too.  We waited to see Strokkur, the geyser that erupts every few minutes.

Robin got an excellent photo of the erruption, showing the force of water shot out.

From there we went on to see Gullfoss waterfall, which is feed by a melting glacier.  The volume of water is pretty impressive. We did not have time to get really close (and really wet) but that was fine by me - the weather was beginning to close in and it had started to rain.

Returning to the coach we drove over a huge area of flat lava fields to a geothermal plant which was very interesting. From this plant, hot water and electricity is generated for Reykjavik from the very hot water in the ground.

Sunset here today is at midnight - sunrise tomorrow is at 3 am - but I won't be awake to see either...
