Puerto Montt

This morning we anchored in the bay at Puerto Montt and took a ship's tender to the pier for our shore excursion to Fruitillar on the shores of Lake Llanquihue.  The port itself is just a town, and we drove straight through that really, with the guide pointing out a few things, statues, interesting buildings etc.

Our first stop was at Puerto Varas where we had our first views of the volcanoes in the distance.  We then continued on around the lake to Frutillar, for a longer stay with better views.  The area was settled in the main by Germans in the late 1800's and the buildings have a distinct Black Forest look about them.  There was a very interesting Colonial Museum with exhibits depicting the life of those early settlers.

The volcano above is dormant and being so high, over 7,000 feet, it has snow on the whole year around.

The Colonial Museum was a collection of buildings in a beautiful garden.  Unfortunately we did not have enough time to really do it justice.
