At primary school here, the kids used to be given a tube containing a very tiny sapling to plant and Kate planted her's at the bottom of the garden. It grew steadily but slowly down there and got fairly tall but it never did that well but this year is suddenly died. So today it went - I was too slow with the camera so I missed the top coming off. The men had the whole tree out in next to no time! It was dropped into the right-of-way at the back, where they mulched it and that was it - gone. As it happened Kate was here when the tree went.

Once the tree came down we had a look at the stump to see if there was any evidence of what killed it. It did have a few soft bits in the trunk but really it looked ok - maybe it just did not get enough water.
