Hornden on the Hill

The area around Grays is very built up but away from the river, and the motorways,  there are some areas that are still unspoilt.  We took a short drive through Orsett, which is a nice village, to the smaller village of Hornden on the Hill.  This village is very old - the church dates back to the early 1200's.  It has the narrowest of high streets and more pubs than shops.  World cup fever has reached here too - the bunting was out for England.

Robin was rather taken with the unusual church spire and took this artistic shoot...

Growing up in Australia it's hard to imagine any structure dating back to the 1200s. It's quite incredible to think it's been standing for 800 years.
